Spring Song
Spring Song was among the very first of my compositions for brass band to be publicly performed. It was originally composed, not as a solo piece, but simply as a short work for band, for the 2014 Foden’s Young Composer Competition. The piece didn’t win the competition, but I was later asked by the band’s principal cornet player Mark Wilkinson if I would consider reworking it as a solo for cornet and band. Spring Song in its new format received its first public performance at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester in September of that year at the Northern Brass Arts Festival and was subsequently recorded on the Foden’s album Patrons’ Choice IX.
