Gwahoddiad

The popular hymn Gwahoddiad has long been considered indigenously Welsh, but it is actually of American origin. The English words and the tune were written in 1872 by American Methodist minister and gospel songwriter Lewis Hartsough. The Welsh version was translated by Calvinist Methodist minister and musician Ieuan Gwyllt, much to the delight of the original composer.

The opening line of this rich arrangement for brass band features Solo Horn, who is soon joined by other instruments from the middle sections of the band. The melodic line is richly adorned throughout. As if to reinforce the hymn's adoptive Welsh identity, the climax features a phrase from the Welsh national anthem Land of my Fathers, before a calm and soft ending.
