Ballade for Bass

This work was written for the virtuoso tuba player, James Gourlay, who, with pianist Caryl Conger, gave the world premiere at the 2016 International Euphonium and Tuba Festival in Atlanta, Georgia.

The dictionary defines a ballade as a self-contained narrative song, which Chopin, in his ‘ballades' for solo piano, developed into a longer work of a dramatic nature. The present piece conforms to those principles and is in a simple ABA format, with the gentle cantilena of the outer sections contrasted with the more dramatic material of the central episode.
